Revelation 17:3, 9-10, 18 – “ . . . and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet colored beast . . . having seven heads and ten horns . . . The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sits. Five kings have already fallen, the sixth now reigns, and the seventh is yet to come, but his reign will be brief. The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.”
In Revelation we are told that a woman will be sitting upon a red beast. In other words, a religious body will have control over the economic and governmental bodies. Revelation is quite clear that there are two beasts: “one a king and one a false prophet. There is reason to believe that a Pope may turn out to be the False Prophet . . . This is in fact suggested by the fact that the first beast rises from the sea but the second beast rises from the land” http://www.be-ready.org/pope.html.
Could we be seeing the rise of the woman who sits on the beast? If this is true, then is the woman the Roman Catholic Church? And does that mean that the head of this religious body is the “Antichrist”? Martin Luther is allegedly quoted as saying “I feel much freer now that I am certain the pope is the Antichrist”. Pope Benedict XVI even declared that the woman in Revelation 12 is Mary, herself!

We also have the prophecies of St. Malachy that predicts that Pope Benedict XVI will be the next to last pope, the last pope will be Peter the Roman who cooperates with the Antichrist, and that this cooperation will result in the city of seven hills being destroyed.

If the end-times evil world system does end up centered in Rome and led by an individual of that city, then the pope becomes the most likely candidate! And Revelation is quite clear that the woman is finally removed from the back of the beast (Revelation 17:16). While this sentiment might tickle the ears, no matter how much we want to correlate the seven hills with Rome all of these passages in Revelation point to Babylon.
Revelation 13:16-17 – “And he causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”
What is telling, however, is the scriptures that clearly state that the False Prophet is the one that forces all to take the mark of the beast, to worship the idol made in his image, and to be unable to conduct financial transactions unless one has that mark. In 2009 Pope Benedict claimed that the capitalist mentality was responsible for the global financial meltdown and called for the world’s nations to transfer part of their powers to a world financial authority and that there was also an urgent need for a world political authority (Caritas in Veritate encyclical). Even more interesting is that the Vatican just recently the published a report calling for the establishment of a global authority and a central world bank to rule over the world’s diverse financial institutions. Again, I must ask if we could be seeing the rise of the woman who sits on the beast? If so, then is the woman the Roman Catholic Church, and is the Pope the False Prophet? Perhaps the Vatican merely laying the groundwork and setting up the stage for the true False Prophet to arise with their belief that “a world Authority becomes the only horizon compatible with the new realities of our time and the needs of humankind” and “Only a spirit of concord that rises above divisions and conflicts will allow humanity to be authentically one family and to conceive of a new world with the creation of a world public Authority at the service of the common good.”
History is moving extremely quickly towards the prophesied one world government, the one world financial system, and the rise of both the Antichrist and the False Prophet. The stage is being set. That being said, one can only ask: “How close are we to the return of Christ?”
