Luke 21:11 – “And there shall be great earthquakes in various places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs from heaven.”
Mark 13:8 – “Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But these are only the beginnings of the birth pains, with more to come.”
This year has been filled with monumental disasters. It started out on January 1st with a great flood of “biblical” proportions in Queensland, Australia and a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Santiago Del Estero, Argentina. These were followed by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Araucania, Chile on January 2nd. Mid month saw major flooding in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that killed close to 550 people, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in the Loyalty Islands and a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Southwestern Pakistan.
In February Christchurch, New Zealand was hit with a major earthquake that caused widespread damage, several power outages, toppled buildings, and buckled streets. March saw the 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Honshu, Japan that caused a tsunami that swept debris miles inland, and the destruction of the Fukushima nuclear plants.
At least six earthquakes greater than 6.5 magnitude hit various places in April and May, and then again in June a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the Fox and Aleutian Islands, Alaska. May and June also saw several volcanic eruptions that impacted air travel and closed airports, as well as flooding in China. Hundreds to thousands of dead fish, frogs, and birds are found worldwide, but especially in Florida, Texas, Kansas, Connecticut, and New York. The United States was also hit with a series of tornados that according to some sources, was the worst tornado rampage in history of world, with nearly 200 tornados recorded and over 300 lives lost in just a single day, including four level EF5 events.
In July we began to hear reports of devastating famines, especially in Somalia, Africa and heat waves baked the United States and Canada throughout July and August, and a 7.6 magnitude earthquake just south of The Kermadic Islands near New Zealand in July, followed by three 7.0 or greater magnitude earthquakes in Vanuatu and Northern Peru.
September again saw a major earthquake in Vanuatu, and a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Fiji. Floods in Pakistan killed more than 200 people, and the famine in Somalia is expected to kill over 750,000 by the end of 2011.
October shook the Kermadic Islands and also Eastern Turkey with 7.4 and 7.2 magnitude earthquakes. Bangkok, Thailand hit with the worst flood in half a century and the death toll had risen to 320. In November, a relatively small earthquake hit Turkey toppling several hotels and killing at least 5 people, and there was flooding in Mexico and in Vermont.
December saw a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in the eastern New Guinea Region, Papua New Guinea, as well as a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Southwestern Siberia, Russia. Severe winter storms and flooding are expected in Alaska.
Worldwide there is a food shortage in many parts of the world. People in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen have been protesting food prices and overturning regimes in these states and nations. Farmers in Australia have been plagued by a mouse invasion. There have been many recalls of contaminated foods in the United States. Scientists have created a variety of “bird flu” so dangerous that they have been warned not to publish their processes. Bacteria have been found in New Delhi water supplies that are highly resistant to almost all known antibiotics. Yellow fever has been reported in Uganda, Chad, the Congo, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire this year. Measles outbreaks have occurred in the United States, Spain, Romania, Macedonia, and Uzbekistan, resulting in over 26,000 measles cases this year and nine deaths.
Prophecy continues to unfold as foretold by the Hebrew prophets. The stage is being set, the birth pains are beginning to be more noticeable. That being said, one can only ask: “How close are we to the return of Christ?”
