Prophecy Sign: Earthquakes and Earthquake Swarms
Mark 13:8 – “There will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines . . .”
Luke 21:11 – “And there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.”
The question of whether earthquakes are increasing is a common question about the timing of end times prophecies. Scripture states that “great” earthquakes will appear in various (or diverse) places and that they will be like the beginning of birth pains. The total number of quakes has increased each year since 2012.

2017
This year, 2017, has been another remarkably quiet year for “great” earthquakes, but the total number of earthquakes (125675) are 4.9 times the average from 2000 to 2012 (25721), and over 6.86 times the amount in 2012 (18328).
- Quakes in the 8.0 and above range were 100% of the average since 1900 (I1).
- Quakes in the 7.0 to 7.9 range (6) were 40% of the average since 1900 (15).
- Quakes in the 6.0 to 6.9 range (104) were 78% of the average since 1900 (134).
- The number of large earthquakes (111) this year were -26% of the average since 1900 (150).
- The total number of earthquakes (125675) is 6.86 times greater than the total number in 2012 (18328), and 1.37 times greater than the total number in 2013 (91423).
- The total number of earthquakes (125675) is 3.95 times greater than any in any of the years prior to 2012 (31777 in 2008).

Prophecy Sign: Signs In The Heavens
Luke 21:25 – “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring.”
The heavens in 2017 were alive and well. A Super-moon on December 3rd. A total solar eclipse that crossed parts of the United States continent on August 21, 2017. The eclipse passed directly over twelve states – Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The first contact in the USA was in Oregon, the 33rd State of the Union The last contact in the USA was in South Carolina, which is on the 33rd parallel. It happened on the 233rd day of the year, and it came 33 days before the sign of the Virgin depicted in Revelation 12, which happened on September 23rd. It was 99 years since the last total solar eclipse that went shore to shore in the US, and September 23rd was 99 days from the end of the year.
Prophecy Sign: Flooding
Luke 21:25 – “And upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring . . .”
Major flooding occurred in California during February, impacting the Oroville Dam. Hurricane Harvey was the costliest tropical cyclone on record, inflicting nearly $200 billion (2017 USD) in damage, primarily from widespread flooding in the Houston metropolitan area. Hurricane Irma was the first Category 5 hurricane to strike the Leeward Islands on record, followed by Hurricane Maria two weeks later. Montreal, and Laval in southern Canada were hit in May 2017, and LaPeche in October. Overseas floods impacted India including both north and east Bengal, and Mumbai. Karachi Pakistan, China, Iran, Thailand, the Philippines, and Zimbabwe also experienced flooding during 2017.
Prophecy Sign: Famines/Pestilences
Luke 21:11 – “There will also be famines and pestilences . . .”
South Sudan has been plagued with famines this year due to war and severe drought conditions. Yemen, Somalia and Nigeria have also been hit hard this year. Record high deadly radiation levels are coming from a hole at the Fukushima power plant in Japan. The World Health Organization warns that polluted environments cause the death of 1.7 million children a year due to diarrhea, malaria and pneumonia. The WHO also warns that the entire world is running out of antibiotics. The United States has seen an exponential increase in deaths due to opioid addiction and overdose.
Prophecy Sign: Mass Deaths
Hosea 4:3. –”The beasts of the field, the fowls of heaven; and the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.”
As of December 12th there were 442 known mass death events across 79 countries. The figures for the year are astronomical. These deaths include fish, fish, and more fish, including whales, dolphins, seals, and turtles. Even sharks have been dying off in mass numbers. Birds, chickens, ducks, hippos, and cattle round out the astronomical figures. Hardest hit are the fish and other sea creatures, followed closely by the bird populations. Praise Yahweh, the bee populations have remained stable during 2017.
The www.endtimes-bibleprophecy.com website says it this way: “Millions of Fish and massive numbers of various marine creatures are washing ashore dead. Birds are falling dead out of the sky, and millions of poultry and wildlife are dying from avian flu. Some people say this is all a mystery. Some say these are all natural die offs. Some people say that Chemtrails is the cause. Some say this is caused by Fukushima. Some people say this is due to man’s pollution. And others say this is God’s judgment. Whatever the cause, we know one thing for certain, that this was prophesied to happen in the Bible.” [Bold emphasis mine]
Other Signs
Tornadoes/Cyclones
According Wikipedia there have been 1,396 confirmed tornadoes in the United States as of December. The 1991-2010 January-September average number of tornadoes is 1,109, so this year the US is almost 126% above average. Canada had only 34 confirmed tornadoes. Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos islands, the Dominican Republic Guadeloupe, and many Virgin Islands were hit especially hard by Irma and Marie. Puerto Rico still has around 50% of its citizens without power. Austria was the only European country to experience a tornado this year.
Volcanoes
Volcanic activity in 2017 started early in the year with India’s only active volcano for four hours in January. Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire, and Italy’s Mount Etna both erupted in February. Indonesia’s Mount Sinabung in north Sumatra province erupted seven times over the course of a single day in March. There are currently over twenty-five volcanoes world-wide that are either very restless or actually erupting.
Conclusions
Mark 13:8 – “. . . . These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.”
The question of whether the heavenly and earthly signs are increasing as do birth pains during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, is a valid question for the days in which we live. Earthquake and volcano activity are both on the rise, as are mass deaths, but overall, I believe that the birth pains have not yet fully manifested. Before the world is verifiably experiencing what Yeshua terms birth pangs, false prophets will arise who will mislead many, lawlessness must increase, and the gospel will be preached to all the nations. Only after these things, will the third trimester pangs begin and the end come.
Final Thought
Prophecy continues to unfold as foretold by the Hebrew Prophets. The day is coming when Yahweh will show his strength on the mountains of Israel. What is prophesied will come to pass, what is foretold will be made known. Time is short – Yeshua Ha’Mashiach is coming soon – get busy reaching the lost.
